Pharmaceutical companies that have prescription drugs in their portfolio must equip them with safety features from 9 February 2019 onward, so that they can be checked for their authenticity before being dispensed to the patient. Without these safety features, prescription drugs may no longer be sold from this date onward. To be able to subject their products to the legally required authentication, pharmaceutical companies must connect to the national verification system. In Germany, this system is developed by securPharm. Pharmaceutical companies are connected by the operating company of the database system for the pharmaceutical industry, ACS PharmaProtect GmbH.

The EU-Commission points out the legal obligations of the stakeholders regarding the implementation of savety features under the Falsified Medicines Directive in the letter of 18 october 2018.
